A Helper Suitable for Adam
In Genesis 2:18, God said, “It is not good that the man should be alone; I will make him a helper suitable for him.” Then verse 19 says:
“Now the LORD God had formed out of the ground all the wild animals and all the birds in the sky. He brought them to the man to see what he would name them; and whatever the man called each living creature, that was its name.” (Genesis 2:19)
After God said He would make a helper for Adam, the Bible states that He formed various beasts of the field and birds of the air from the ground. God brought these creatures before Adam, but Adam only gave them names—he did not take them as a beloved partner. Genesis 2:20 says, “So the man gave names to all the livestock, the birds in the sky, and all the wild animals.”
Adam named the animals and birds God had formed, but he did not accept any of them as his helper. Thus, the latter part of verse 20 says, “But for Adam no suitable helper was found.”
Then God worked again in verse 21:
“So the LORD God caused the man to fall into a deep sleep; and while he was sleeping, He took one of the man’s ribs and then closed up the place with flesh. Then the LORD God made a woman from the rib He had taken out of the man, and He brought her to the man.” (Genesis 2:21–22)
When Adam saw the woman, a loving heart arose in him, and he said, “This is now bone of my bones and flesh of my flesh.” He loved her.
Although this is a historical account of how God created woman during the creation of the heavens and the earth, it contains a deep spiritual meaning. Just as Adam had no helper, Jesus Christ also had no bride—no suitable partner. Certainly, there were many people living on earth, and among them were wise and admirable individuals. But none of them were worthy to become the bride of Jesus Christ.
When God made the creatures of the field from the dust and brought them to Adam, Adam was not satisfied with any of them. Thus God caused Adam to fall into a deep sleep, took a rib from his side, and made woman from it. When God brought her to Adam, he was satisfied. In the same way, God desired to provide a bride for Jesus Christ.
A woman is precious and beloved because she came from man. God took Adam’s rib to make the woman, and Adam was put into a deep sleep for this to happen. In the same way, Jesus Christ was crucified and died—He fell into a “deep sleep”—in order to obtain His bride, the Church, the body of Christ. After Jesus died on the cross, a Roman soldier pierced His side with a spear, and blood and water flowed out. That blood was shed to wash away our sins.
Just as Eve came from Adam’s side, Jesus Christ, through His death on the cross, gave us life. Because Eve came from Adam’s body, she was able to become his wife. Likewise, we must come from Christ in order to become His bride. Only those who are born again through Jesus can receive His love, become His bride, and be members of His body.
Jesus was crucified to make us born again and to allow us to receive precious grace in Him. The life that comes from Jesus Christ must enter into us; only then can we enjoy eternal life with Christ.
If we live on this earth without receiving the life of Christ, then when we leave this world after many years, we will inevitably face eternal destruction. But when we receive forgiveness of sins through the blood of Jesus and welcome Him into our hearts, the life of Christ enters into us. Anyone who receives Jesus Christ has the life of Christ within their heart. That life works within them, enabling them to live eternally with Christ. Because the life of Jesus is within them, they become His beloved bride. And as they live with Jesus, the precious work of giving birth to the life of Christ happens through them.
People often fail to understand this and view the words of Jesus Christ merely as moral teachings or religious doctrine. Thus, they think that by attending church, avoiding sin, giving offerings, and living a good and upright life, their hearts will improve and they will grow closer to God and eventually enter heaven. But throughout the Bible we see again and again that no matter how virtuous human efforts may be, they can neither please God nor satisfy Christ.
It is like when Adam had no helper: even though God formed animals from the ground and brought them to Adam, he did not find satisfaction or delight in any of them.
Just as Adam was satisfied only with the woman made from his own rib, we can please Jesus only when we are born again through Him. If anyone is zealously praying, working, or serving God without having received forgiveness of sins and being born again through Christ, such works may appear admirable to us—but before God, they amount to nothing.
In Matthew 7, Jesus says that on the day of judgment, some will say, “Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in Your name? Did we not drive out demons and perform many miracles in Your name?” But Jesus will tell them plainly, “I never knew you. Away from me, you evildoers.”
These are people who will be rejected by Jesus and face eternal destruction—those who have no relationship with Christ. No matter how much they pray or serve, if they have not been born again through Jesus Christ, they have no connection with Him and will be cast away.
Today, countless people fail to reach the true relationship of being the bride of Christ. Instead, they take pride in their own efforts, works, and religious zeal. That is why the Bible repeatedly teaches that we cannot stand before God by our own righteousness or effort.
By God’s grace, we must receive Jesus Christ into our hearts, obtain forgiveness of sins, and be born again so that the life of Christ may enter us. Jesus must be able to say of us, “This is bone of my bones and flesh of my flesh.” We must be in a state where Jesus can say we are one with Him. Only then can we stand confidently before God and become His beloved children.
Just as Eve was bone of Adam’s bones and flesh of his flesh, we too must become one with Jesus Christ and be united with Him as one body. When your sins are completely washed white as snow by the blood of Jesus, the life of Christ enters you. Then you become a person born again by the life of Jesus and begin to live a true life of faith before God.
