David ran away from Saul and came to the priest Ahimelech. Ahimelech gave David holy bread. It says the holy bread was made from fine flour and replaced every Sabbath with new bread. That bread was for the priests to eat, but he gave the bread to David.
Jesus’ disciples took ears of grain from a wheat field on the Sabbath and ate them. The Pharisees criticized that. Then Jesus told them of when Ahimelech gave the bread to David, and instead rebuked them. Jesus was pointing out that the Pharisees were serving God with the law.
The entire law of God is for us. If we do not know the true heart of God, then we can only serve God in fear while tied down to the law. But if we come to know God’s true heart, we can be thankful for anything and freely go out to God.
