Man committed sin and he should have received curse and destruction before God. But a flawless lamb or goat shed its blood and died on the altar. Its body was burned and God’s wrath was satisfied. The place where that happened is the altar. The sin offering fulfilled on the altar is the shadow of Jesus Christ.
In the time of the Old Testament, the people of Israel could not help but to commit sin and be judged, so they brought a lamb or goat to the tabernacle. And when they offered it as an offering, the judgment came on the lamb or goat. Today, we are also committing all kinds of sins, but God has placed all of the judgment on Jesus Christ, so the judgment that was coming to us has ended. We may remember the sins we have committed, but God’s wrath has already come down on Jesus Christ, so God can no longer find our sins.
The altar is where the offering is burned.
Leviticus 1:8-9 “And the priests, Aaron’s sons, shall lay the parts, the head, and the fat, in order upon the wood that is on the fire which is upon the altar: but his inwards and his legs shall he wash in water: and the priest shall burn all on the altar, to be a burnt sacrifice, an offering made by fire, of a sweet savour unto the Lord.”
