God said to put the altar of incense opposite the mercy seat. He is saying to cover the mercy seat with the fragrant smoke of the incense. The mercy seat is the place where we meet God. The reason he said to cover the mercy seat with the fragrant smoke of the incense is because when God meets with us, he will surely meet us through Jesus Christ, our mediator.
Even if Satan accuses us of our many faults before God, Jesus is ready to win effortlessly. Our mediator, Jesus Christ, is at God’s right hand, and he shows the mark of the spear on his side, and the cut marks on his hands and forehead. It is true that we have sinned, but Jesus is showing the proof that the price of those sins has been paid.
Just like Jesus is at the right hand of God and interceding for us, the reason God put the altar of incense on the opposite side of the mercy seat, the place where God meets us, is because the smoke of the incense is covering the place of our meeting with God, so we can boldly go out before God anytime.
