The altar of incense is the smallest article in the tabernacle. Though it may be the smallest, the reason God placed it near the Most Holy Place and the mercy seat is so He can think about Jesus who is praying for us and so He can accept us with joy when He meets with us. All the articles of the tabernacle are made from acacia wood. That acacia wood represents the character of Jesus Christ.
The closer you get to God, the more the place is filled with His brilliant glory, but the material is acacia wood. We go out to God boldly through His glorious promise, but the more we go out before Him, the more our weak image is revealed. The tabernacle represents Jesus Christ, but on the other hand, it also represents the life of a born-again Christian.
God is the one who possesses glory that is enough to handle our weaknesses. God is showing us the altar of incense to help us realize the fact that He allows us to go before Him through Jesus Christ, no matter what position we are in.
