In Numbers 16, there is the story of Korah, Abiram, Dathan, and On who argued with Moses and opposed him. The 250 people who followed these four people said, “We are also holy, and God is with us, and we can also give offerings to God.” They said they will bring censers and burn incense before God. Then, God opened the mouth of the earth and swallowed Korah, Dathan, and Abiram, and all that lived in their tents, and he also sent fire from heaven to burn the 250 people who had burned incense, and they also died.
The group with Korah received the punishment for their sin. But Jesus Christ received the judgment in our place. To make us realize and testify of that, God said to make the bronze censers that had received the judgment into broad plates for the altar. The reason why the people who followed Korah were judged and died for their sin before God is because they did not have anyone to take the judgment in their place.
Although we have committed sins and have done evil, the reason we can go boldly out to God is because Jesus took the punishment for those sins for us. Every time we look at the altar, we must remember that Jesus, who is the lamb, became the sacrifice and received the judgment for us. And we must boldly go out to God.
